When a change is requested for an auto policy it is usually because a new vehicle is being added to the policy. Many insurers are able to take requests for changes to an insureds policy over the phone providing all of the required information is given. Usually this is the policy number along with some other form or personal information which may or may not include an individual’s social security number. Many of the larger regional or national insurance carriers have either an automated phone system or a dedicated support department. The phone is one of the best ways an insurer can communicate with their customers. There used to be a time where it was common to request a change to be made to an automobile policy by sending a signed written letter explaining what needed to be changed. This can still be done but does require a bit of follow-up by the customer. Sending a letter is a good way to make a change the deductible or the minimum amount of premium that needs to be paid depending on the billing method. One thing to keep in mind though is that it takes time for a letter to get to the proper department and then it still may take longer to make the requested change. Many insurers are making it more convenient for a customer to make a change to an automobile policy by going online to an insurer’s website. Sites like Progressive and Esurance are exclusively web based but more and more traditional insurers are providing insurers access online as well. Making a change online is a convenient way for people to make changes themselves providing they know how the changes made will affect their policy. Insurers that provide online access to an automobile policy have safeguards in place to an insured cannot adversely affect their policy without raising red flags. Many times warning messages will appear when a change is not allowed. The most common type of change that is made to a policy online is when a new vehicle is added to the policy. An insured can also be applying for a new automobile policy on a site as well. When a new vehicle is added online the vehicle to be replaced needs to be removed.
