Since Android devices are usually battery-powered, Android is designed to manage processes to keep power consumption at a minimum. When connecting or disconnecting charging power and when briefly actuating the power button or home button, all while the device is powered off, a visual battery meter whose appearance varies among vendors appears on the screen, allowing the user to quickly assess the charge status of a powered-off device without having to start it. On more recent phones, its place is occupied by a task key used to access the list of recently used apps when actuated. Google recommends mobile application developers to locate menus within the user interface.

Key Changes for SDK 37

With Android 17 Beta 2, Google is expanding its SMS OTP protection by automatically delaying access to SMS messages with OTP for apps that aren’t the intended recipient or the default SMS handler app. This feature is designed to offer seamless task continuity, enabling users to pick up exactly where they left off in their workflow across their Android ecosystem. Android 16 QPR1 included code for a new system-level feature called “Task Continuity,” and, as you’d expect, it’s designed to let you seamlessly transfer an app’s current state from one Android device to another. Back in July 2025, we spotted Google working on a Handoff feature that would allow users to sync notifications, share files, and continue apps across their Android devices. Once consent is provided, this session-based access eliminates the need for repeated prompts for location-dependent features. With Android 17 Beta 3, Google is introducing a new location button that apps can use to request the user’s precise location for one session (i.e., until you close the app).
As such, we’re labeling these features as “carry over features” as they technically went live with Android 16, but will most likely reach the wider Android platform with Android 17. These features are live on Pixel phones running Android 16, but Android OEMs could adopt them as part of the Android 17 platform update. Google added features to Android 16 after the initial stable release, primarily through the Android 16 QPR1, QPR2, and QPR3 releases. Presuming Google doesn’t change its timelines, we expect stable Android 17 to be released sometime in June 2026. Before the official reveal, a trusted source within Google had shared evidence with us that clearly shows the company using “CinnamonBun” as the internal codename for API level 37.0, i.e., for Android 17.

To address this, Google added the taskbar overflow button with the release of Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2.

Android is a Linux distribution according to the Linux Foundation, Google’s open-source chief Chris DiBona, and several journalists.

While the core Android system remains free, OEMs in Europe would be required to purchase a paid license to the core suite of Google applications, such as Gmail, Google Maps and the Google Play Store.

At Google I/O in May 2016, Google announced Daydream, a virtual reality platform that relied on a smartphone and provided VR capabilities through a virtual reality headset and controller designed by Google itself.

Within Android 16 QPR2 Beta 2, we found code for a third companion device profile for third-party apps, specifically the “Medical” profile.

Features

With this new gesture, you can double-tap on an empty spot of the lock screen to turn off your Pixel phone’s screen.

Android 16 QPR2 delivers a variety of new features for touchpads and mice, including expanded gesture actions and robust accessibility options.

However, be careful when deleting messaging or social media apps, as it is possible to delete some photos and videos you have saved there if you are not careful.

Even though the Internet Panel offered more functionality, users weren’t happy because it required more steps to toggle mobile data and Wi-Fi.

In Android 17 Beta 3, if you have a 2×1 Quick Settings tile, tapping the left side (on the Wi-Fi icon itself) toggles Wi-Fi on and off, while tapping the right side (outside the Wi-Fi icon, on the label) opens the pop-up.

Once you’ve installed a beta build, you’ll automatically get future updates over-the-air for all later previews and Betas.

Within Android 16 QPR2 Beta 2, we found code for a third companion device profile for third-party apps, specifically the “Medical” profile. Instead of requesting permissions one by one, these apps can use a device profile to show a single, bundled permission prompt. The “retake” button will be handy for quickly starting over after a mistake, while the “delete” button adds a convenient way to discard a recording without having to find it in your gallery.

Requirements (Latest version)

This Time zone change notification went live in the July 2025 Android Canary release and was graduated to the stable release with Android 16 QPR2 stable release. The notification’s title will say “Your time zone changed,” and the body will include the exact time zone you’re now in. The description states that the feature will allow you to “receive a notification when your time zone is automatically updated.” Your Android phone can automatically adjust the time when you enter a new time zone. A new toggle in Android 16 QPR2 allows you to disable Failed Authentication Lock.

Versatile Video Coding (VVC) Support

More importantly, the “Microphone, Camera & Location” dialog now correctly lists the specific apps accessing your location. Unlike the solid green background used for camera and microphone alerts, the location indicator uses a solid blue background (though the system reverts to green if multiple permissions are in use). To try it out, open the Terminal app and tap the Display button in the top-right corner to launch a session that supports graphical output. Android 16 QPR2 introduces a built-in Parental Controls menu that provides a centralized location for managing device-specific restrictions. In Android 16 QPR1, this has changed to display the same UI element that you’d see in the notification shade, where you can hang up, toggle the speaker, and mute your microphone.
This feature is similar to features that OEMs have added to such devices, allowing users to run apps at any window size and aspect ratio. Starting with the touchpad, the three-finger tap gesture introduced in QPR1 is now more customizable. Android 16 QPR2 delivers a variety of new features for touchpads and mice, including expanded gesture actions and robust accessibility options.

Follow on Google Google rolls out “Search Profiles,” giving users a touch of social media in their Discover feed for videos and more. All-New Samsung announced that a revamped Health app is on the way to users, highlighting a host of new features. If the app tries to call audio APIs while the application is not in a valid lifecycle, the audio playback and volume change APIs will fail silently without an exception thrown or failure message provided. This allows you to configure a constant quality (CQ) mode for video encoders, giving you finer control over video quality beyond simple bitrate settings. This includes defining the video/vvc MIME type in MediaFormat, adding new VVC profiles in MediaCodecInfo, and integrating support into MediaExtractor.
Pichai himself would eventually switch positions, becoming the new CEO of Google in August 2015 following the company’s restructure into the Alphabet conglomerate, making Hiroshi Lockheimer the new head of Android. Since 2008, Android has seen numerous updates which have incrementally improved the operating system, adding new features and fixing bugs in previous releases. Speculation about Google’s intention to enter spinalto casino the mobile communications market continued to build through December 2006. Not much was known about the secretive Android Inc. at the time, with the company having provided few details other than that it was making software for mobile phones.

Storage

With Android 16 Beta 3, Google is giving app developers a chance to test if their apps are affected by this upcoming change. Local Network Protection will eventually require apps to request specific permission to access the local network. Later QPR betas give us even more features that can be chalked up to the next platform release, unless they are completely Pixel-exclusive. This gives us situations where we can try out new features coming to Android 17 (by checking them out in Android 16 QPR1 betas) before the stable Android 16 update is even launched! Android 17 will also crack down on apps that try to start audio in the background automatically when your phone boots up. Going forward, apps will need to either be visible on your screen or run a proper foreground service designed for things like music playback, navigation, or calls.
Android 17 QPR1 Beta 1 also brings an option to change the Terminal’s resolution through a new “Display resolution” setting. You can download themes from your phone’s browser, and opening them through any file manager will automatically import the theme into the Terminal app. Updates to the Android Photo picker are handled through Google Play Services, so this change might not be restricted or even tied to Android 17. Code within Android 17 QPR1 Beta 2 suggests that the Photo picker could include a camera option.

Developer options are initially hidden since Android 4.2 “Jelly Bean”, but can be enabled by actuating the operating system’s build number in the device information seven times.
